Being a huge fan of Thrasher Magazine since a young age, Kons was honored to create an animated intro using the iconic Thrasher logotype. It was in the midst of his time at Thrasher headquarters in San Francisco, between skate sessions at Double Rock, when the vision for Zombie Eye was realized. With the concept in mind, he filmed his own eyeball and put together this postapocalyptic logo animation using various techniques such as tracking, retiming, rotoscoping and grungifying.

You can see the motion graphic in the wild here, leading James Capps skate part Seek Know1edge.

Behind the Scenes

Storyboards were produced to show a few options for concepts that tell the client story.

Styleframes were used to explore brand elements to drive the Motion Graphics.

An animatic was produced to determin timing and pacing.

concepts

Many early concepts allow to freely brainstorm ideas and give a lot to pick from in order to acknowledge the most powerful concept that can be delivered.

assets

Some assets were provided such as the logo and some assets had to be generated from existing images.
The veins here were cut out of photographs of lightning.

vein-test-2

Sometimes assets are unavailable online or from the client so they have to be generated in house.
An early test shows Kons using footage of his own eyeball to communicate his idea.
